the round piece that isn't in the second picture is called a torque converter. It serves the same purpose as a clutch, but for an automatic transmission. Mine has "stall speed" of 3000 RPM, that is the speed at which the highest amount 0f torque is delivered to the wheel.I ended up paying to have the broken one rebuilt. A worthy investment.
